Bat Booth® 2.0 Service – BlueScope Steel, NSW Feb 2026

Mideco recently conducted the first service for the Bat Booth® 2.0 at BlueScope Steel’s Port Kembla facility in New South Wales. This visit focused on checking the system’s filtration integrity and optimizing the de-dusting cycle to handle the unique metallic dust loads produced during the steelmaking process. With this, we have ensured that the unit continues to provide a reliable protection against hazardous particulates for the site’s personnel.

Background

BlueScope Steel is a global leader in metal coating and painting, providing essential components for the international building and construction industries. This industrial setting presents a high-risk environment involving the processing of iron ore, coke, and lime, which generates fine airborne particulates and toxic metallic dust. Beyond the standard respiratory risks of fine dust, the steel industry must also manage the potential hazards of heavy metal exposure and the explosive nature of certain metal dusts. This application demonstrates that the Bat Booth is a critical safety asset for heavy manufacturing and metalwork, moving beyond traditional mining to protect workers in the world’s most demanding industrial plants.

Service Log

Since its initial installation, the Bat Booth has performed reliably with no recorded faults, maintaining consistent control sequences and fan operation despite the heavy-duty nature of the site. During this first scheduled service on February, our technician performed a comprehensive multi-point inspection and a full filter cartridge replacement.

Field Observations

The service team noted that the Bat Booth is being used regularly and acts as a primary defense against personal dust contamination. A key discovery during this visit was the high volume of airborne particles settling from above the unit due to the facility’s massive scale and output. Following the service and filter change, there was an immediate and measurable improvement in airflow. This is vital for worker comfort and health, as it ensures that the 10-second cycle remains effective even when the surrounding environment is heavily laden with fine metal dust.

Future Proofing

The metallic dust can be more abrasive and heavier than standard quarry dust, so regular maintenance every 4 to 6 months is essential to prevent premature wear on the internal components. Mideco will continue to work closely with BlueScope to monitor dust collection volumes, ensuring the Bat Booth remains a dependable tool for every worker on every shift and continues to protect other people from secondary contamination.
